The story

After the Great Fire of 1871 a temporary city hall stood on this corner. Birds roosted on it, and people joked about being rooked by the politicians inside, so it was called the rookery. Burnham and Root kept the name for the office block they finished here in 1888, and Root carved two rooks into the LaSalle Street arch.

It is a building between two eras, with masonry piers outside and an iron and steel frame within, all set on a floating foundation in the soft clay. At its heart is a glass-roofed light court. In 1905 Frank Lloyd Wright remade it in white marble with gilded patterns drawn from Persian design, and in 1992 it was restored to his design.
