The story
Holabird and Root's Art Deco tower opened in 1930 at the very end of LaSalle Street, and the City's landmark report says its unbroken north front makes a dramatic end to the street. On top stands John Storrs's aluminum Ceres, the Roman goddess of grain, 31 feet tall. Beside the big clock over the door, hooded figures hold grain and corn, the goods traded in the pits inside.
It was Chicago's tallest building until 1965. Its own history adds that Soul Train began on its 43rd floor in 1970, and that it was the model for Wayne Tower in Batman Begins.
A small free museum inside the Jackson Boulevard entrance tells the story on weekdays.

La torre art déco de Holabird y Root se abrió en 1930 justo al final de LaSalle Street, y el informe municipal de monumentos dice que su fachada norte, sin interrupciones, cierra la calle de forma espectacular.
