The story

Augustus Saint-Gaudens spent about fourteen years on this bronze, longer than on any other work. The first plan was Colonel Robert Gould Shaw alone on horseback. His family objected, so Saint-Gaudens set him among his men, the Black soldiers of the 54th Massachusetts marching down Beacon Street in 1863.

On July 18, 1863, the regiment led the assault on Fort Wagner in South Carolina. Shaw and many of his men were killed. Sergeant William H. Carney saved the flag. His act that day was the earliest for which an African American was awarded the Medal of Honor, though the medal itself came only in 1900, and the National Park Service says the 54th helped inspire more than 180,000 Black soldiers to enlist.

The memorial was unveiled on May 31, 1897, with 65 veterans of the regiment leading the parade. At first only the white officers who died were named on it. The names of the Black soldiers were added in the early 1980s. This is where the Black Heritage Trail begins.
