The story

The African Meeting House was built in 1806 by free African American craftsmen, and the museum calls it the oldest Black church building still standing in the nation. Cato Gardner, born in Africa, raised $1,500 toward it. It was church, school and meeting hall at once: Maria Stewart and Frederick Douglass spoke here, William Lloyd Garrison founded the New England Anti-Slavery Society here in 1832, and in 1863 it was a recruiting post for the 54th Massachusetts.

Next door, the Abiel Smith School opened in 1835 for Black children. Its families wanted equal schools, not separate ones. William Cooper Nell led petitions and a boycott, and in 1855 Massachusetts outlawed segregated public schools.

The Meeting House was a synagogue from 1904. The museum bought it in 1972 and has returned it to the way it looked in 1855.
