The cobbled riverfront below the bluff, lined with the old cotton warehouses of Factors Row, with Factors Walk along their upper levels.
The story
River Street is where Savannah made its money. The warehouses along it were the offices of the factors, traders who sold goods on commission, and in Savannah the goods were almost always cotton. Factors Walk runs along their upper floors, level with the top of the bluff.
Bay Street stands about 40 feet above the river. The ballast stone wall that holds the bluff runs three quarters of a mile and averages 19 feet high; the stonemason Michael Cash, from County Wexford, began it at the Lincoln Ramp in 1854 and it was finished in 1869. Carved stones in the ramp walls name the mayor who authorized the work.
Look down as you walk: rails from the horsecar and streetcar lines, which ran until 1946, are still set into the paving. On the promenade stands the African-American Monument, dedicated in 2002, the first major monument in the city to its Black citizens.
