The story
Johnson Square was the first square laid out in Oglethorpe's plan, in 1733, and it is still the largest of the city's 22 squares. It is named for Robert Johnson, the colonial governor of South Carolina and a friend of Oglethorpe.
The obelisk at the center is a monument and a grave. The Marquis de Lafayette laid its cornerstone in 1825, and the remains of General Nathanael Greene, rediscovered, were moved beneath it in 1901.
Look for the bronze sundial honoring Colonel William Bull, for whom Bull Street is named; its base reproduces a map of 1734. Christ Church, on the square, was established in 1733 as the Mother Church of Georgia, and John Wesley and George Whitefield were among its early clergy.
