The story

Wright Square was laid out in 1733 as one of the first four squares. It was first named Percival Square, for the Earl of Egmont, and renamed in 1763 for James Wright, the last royal governor of Georgia.

The man to remember here is Tomochichi. He led the Yamacraws, a band of about two hundred Muscogee and Yamasee people living on the bluff when Oglethorpe arrived, and with Mary Musgrove as interpreter he agreed to the colony and helped it through its first five years. When he died in 1739 he was buried here with military honors.

In 1883 his monument was replaced by a grand one to the railroad president William Washington Gordon. In 1899 citizens set a granite boulder to Tomochichi at the southeast corner of the square. Walk over and find it.
