The colonial exchange and custom house of 1767 to 1771 at the foot of Broad Street, where South Carolina ratified the Constitution and the British kept prisoners in the cellar.
The story
The Old Exchange stands at the foot of Broad Street, facing the harbor, and it has seen nearly every chapter of Charleston's early history. William Rigby Naylor designed it, and it was built between 1767 and 1771 as the colony's commercial exchange and custom house.
When the British held the city in the Revolution, they used the cellar as a prison. A 2012 study documented at least 120 prisoners held in the building during the war. That cellar is the Provost Dungeon, and the only way in is the museum's guided tour of about 25 minutes.
In 1788 the South Carolina convention that ratified the United States Constitution met here, and in 1791 a crowd greeted George Washington from its balcony. The building became a National Historic Landmark in 1973.
The streets around it have a harder history too. In the 1800s enslaved people were sold in this area, from several hundred to many thousands a year, until the city moved the auctions indoors in 1856.
The museum is open every day, from 11 a.m. on Sundays, with tickets sold on site. Allow 45 minutes to an hour.
