A lodge building completed in 1940 with money raised by John Wesley Dobbs, which housed the headquarters of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s office.
The story
John Wesley Dobbs, Grand Master of the Prince Hall Masons of Georgia and the man who named the street Sweet Auburn, raised the money for this lodge building, designed in 1937 and completed in 1940. It housed the Atlanta Civic and Political League, the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the Madame C. J. Walker Beauty School and WERD, which the National Park Service calls the first radio station owned and programmed by African Americans. It was also the headquarters of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s office, the printing operation and the staff offices were on the first floor and in the basement, and his speeches were broadcast on WERD. The Prince Hall Masons still own and meet in the building, which joined the national park's protected ground in 2018.
