The story

Coretta Scott King founded the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change in 1968 to preserve her husband's legacy. After his assassination in Memphis on April 4, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was carried on a farm wagon drawn by mules to Southview Cemetery; in 1970 his remains were moved here, and in 2006 the tomb was rebuilt in Georgia marble so that Mrs. King could lie beside him. It stands on a brick island in a long reflecting pool, near the Eternal Flame. Freedom Hall holds exhibits honoring Dr. and Mrs. King, Mahatma Gandhi and Rosa Parks, and the Coretta Scott King Peace and Meditation Garden has a monument of microphones you can speak into. This is a grave; visitors keep their voices low.
