Amphitheater seating on the High Line above Tenth Avenue, the best place on the park to tell the story of Death Avenue.
The story
Sit on the wooden steps of the 10th Avenue Square and look through the window at the traffic below. In the middle of the 1800s, New York Central freight trains ran at street level here, and Tenth Avenue became known as Death Avenue. The High Line's own history counts more than 540 people killed by trains by 1910. The railroad hired men on horseback, the West Side Cowboys, to ride ahead waving red flags, and the last of them rode in 1941.
The real fix was to lift the tracks off the street. The first train ran on the elevated West Side line in 1933, and in places the line cut straight through factories such as the National Biscuit Company. Trucking slowly emptied it, and by the 1980s the trains had stopped. Friends of the High Line formed in 1999 to save it, and the first section of park opened in 2009.
This square was rebuilt in 2025 with new framing, restored decking and a grove of trident maples, and the High Line says it has a view south toward the Statue of Liberty.

A mediados del siglo XIX, los trenes de carga del New York Central circulaban aquí a nivel de calle, y la Décima Avenida pasó a llamarse Avenida de la Muerte. La propia historia de la High Line cuenta más de 540 personas muertas por los trenes hasta 1910. El ferrocarril contrató hombres a caballo, los West Side Cowboys, que iban delante agitando banderas rojas, y el último cabalgó en 1941.
