The story
Old City Hall was built in 1893 at the head of Pacific Avenue to designs by E. A. Hatherton of San Francisco, with walls eight feet thick at the base, made of bricks brought as ships' ballast, and a free-standing clock tower whose walls lean inward to look taller. Hugh C. Wallace gave the clock and chimes in 1905 in memory of his daughter. Beside it, Édouard Frère Champney's Spanish Steps of 1916 climb to Broadway by the Elks Temple. The hillside once looked down on Tacoma's Chinatown: on November 3, 1885, a mob came down it and drove about 200 Chinese residents out of the city, and their homes were burned. The City Council apologised in 1993, and the Tacoma Chinese Reconciliation Park stands on the shore by Schuster Parkway.

El antiguo Ayuntamiento se construyó en 1893 al comienzo de Pacific Avenue según el diseño de E. A. Hatherton, de San Francisco, con muros de ocho pies de grosor en la base, hechos con ladrillos traídos como lastre en los barcos, y una torre del reloj exenta cuyos muros se inclinan hacia dentro para parecer más alta.
