The 1913 vertical lift bridge at Eleventh Street, renamed in 1997 for the historian Murray Morgan, over the waterway named for Thea Foss in 1989.
The story
The Eleventh Street Bridge opened on February 15, 1913, replacing a swing bridge that sat too low for the tugs and steamers of the City Waterway. Waddell and Harrington of Kansas City chose a vertical lift design for its height and to carry a water pipe across; the lift span hangs from the towers on steel rope. In 1997 it was renamed for Murray Morgan, the Tacoma historian who had worked the graveyard shift here as a bridgetender and wrote Skid Road and Puget's Sound. The water below, an arm of Commencement Bay beside the Puyallup River's delta, where the Puyallup Tribe had several villages, became the City Waterway and in 1989 was renamed for Thea Foss. Part of the Commencement Bay Superfund site from 1983, it was cleaned up by 2006, when more than 425,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment had been dredged or capped.

El puente de la calle Eleventh se inauguró el 15 de febrero de 1913 y sustituyó a un puente giratorio demasiado bajo para los remolcadores y vapores del City Waterway. La firma Waddell and Harrington, de Kansas City, eligió un diseño levadizo vertical por su altura y para llevar una tubería de agua de un lado a otro; el tramo móvil cuelga de las torres con cables de acero.
