The story
The Foss Waterway Seaport is a free maritime heritage museum and working boat shop in the Balfour Dock Building, the last section of a wheat warehouse half a mile long whose construction began in 1900. The Northern Pacific's own railroad carpenters built it, and its roof trusses look like the railway bridges of the day; fires destroyed the other sections, and the brick firewall that saved this one was replaced by a glass wall in the early 2000s. Inside are the Puyallup people and the salmon, canoes, small boats, a rail exhibit and the story of Thea Foss, the Norwegian immigrant who in 1889 bought a rowboat for $5, rented out a small fleet at 50 cents a day and started the business that became Foss Maritime.
Free. Thursday to Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and to 8 p.m. on the third Thursday; closures are posted on the museum's home page.

El Foss Waterway Seaport es un museo gratuito del patrimonio marítimo y un taller de barcos en funcionamiento, en el Balfour Dock Building, el último tramo de un almacén de trigo de media milla de largo cuya construcción empezó en 1900. Lo levantaron los propios carpinteros ferroviarios del Northern Pacific, y sus cerchas recuerdan los puentes de ferrocarril de la época; los incendios destruyeron los demás tramos, y el cortafuegos de ladrillo que salvó este se sustituyó por una pared de vidrio a principios de los años 2000.
