Half a million works across an encyclopedic collection, strongest in Impressionists, Egyptian art and American painting.
The story
The museum was founded in 1870 and opened in 1876 on Copley Square, in a red brick Gothic building at Dartmouth and St. James. It outgrew that in a single generation. In 1909 the collection moved into Guy Lowell's Beaux Arts galleries on Huntington Avenue, the old museum came down, and the Copley Plaza Hotel went up on the site in 1912. Boston demolished its first art museum to build a hotel.
What the guidebooks undersell is the Japanese art. It is the strongest collection outside Japan, more than 100,000 objects including over 30,000 ukiyo-e prints, most of it gathered in the 1880s by a small group of Bostonians who bought while Meiji Japan was modernizing fast and old collections were being broken up. Those galleries were closed for six years and reopened in May 2024.
Two practical things. The museum is closed on Tuesdays, and the late nights are Thursday and Friday, open until ten.

El museo se fundó en 1870 y abrió en 1876 en Copley Square, en un edificio gótico de ladrillo rojo en la esquina de Dartmouth con St. James. Se le quedó pequeño en una sola generación. En 1909 la colección se trasladó a las salas Beaux Arts de Guy Lowell en Huntington Avenue, el edificio antiguo se derribó y en 1912 se levantó allí el Copley Plaza Hotel. Boston demolió su primer museo de arte para construir un hotel.
Lo que las guías dejan corto es el arte japonés. Es la mejor colección fuera de Japón, más de 100.000 piezas, con más de 30.000 estampas ukiyo-e, reunida en su mayoría en la década de 1880 por un pequeño grupo de bostonianos que compraron mientras el Japón Meiji se modernizaba a toda prisa y muchas colecciones antiguas se dispersaban. Esas salas estuvieron cerradas seis años y reabrieron en mayo de 2024.
