The story
Isabella Stewart Gardner built a Venetian palace on Boston marshland and hung every object herself, arranging the rooms by instinct rather than by school or century. Fenway Court opened to the public in February 1903. Her will requires that the collection stay exactly as she left it, and that nothing be sold.
That clause is why the walls look wrong. At 1:24 in the morning on March 18, 1990, two men in police uniforms talked their way past the night guard, taped both guards to pipes in the basement, and spent 81 minutes taking thirteen works. They cut two Rembrandts out of their frames. They took Vermeer's The Concert, a Manet, and five works by Degas. Nothing has been recovered. The reward is $10 million.
Because Isabella forbade rearranging, the empty frames still hang where the paintings were. Stand in the Dutch Room and look at them. Then go down to the courtyard, which is planted and replanted all year and is the reason to stay.
