The story
Acorn Street was called Kitchen Street when it was laid out in the 1820s, and the name was honest. This was the service lane for the mansions on Mount Vernon Street, where their coachmen and cooks lived, and the cobbles under your feet are river stones pulled from the Charles when the hill was built up. In the 1980s the residents formed an association to stop the city paving over them. It is still a private way, which is why so little on it has changed.
On Beacon Street, look at the windows rather than the doors. A few panes are pale lavender. An English supplier put too much manganese oxide into glass shipped here between roughly 1818 and 1824, and sunlight turned it purple. Owners were embarrassed at first. Within a generation it read as the mark of an old family.
Over a thousand gas lamps burn here, day and night, all year. Come before eight in the morning. Acorn Street is one narrow lane where people live, and by ten there is a line waiting to photograph it.
