The surviving heart of Manhattan's Little Italy: a few blocks of tenements, cafes and restaurants on Mulberry Street north of Canal Street.
The story
Walk south on Mulberry Street slowly. The street is named for the mulberry trees that once grew at its bend, farther south. From the 1880s, Italian immigrants filled these tenements, and around the turn of the twentieth century more than nine in ten people in this ward were of Italian birth or origin. In 1896 The New York Times listed laborers and artisans among them, grocers, fruit sellers, tailors, shoemakers and wine merchants, and notaries, lawyers and doctors too. Little Italy once ran from Lafayette Street to the Bowery. Its Italian face now survives mostly on these blocks north of Canal Street; in the 2000 census, only about 8 percent of the people living here claimed Italian ancestry. Every September the Feast of San Gennaro, begun in 1926 by immigrants from Naples to honor their city's patron saint, closes the street for about eleven days. At Grand Street, the Italian American Museum occupies the old Banca Stabile, a bank that served the neighborhood's immigrants. Farther south, the signs turn to Chinese. People live above every restaurant, so ask before you photograph anyone.
