A museum of Chinese American history on Centre Street, grown from a 1980 effort to save Chinatown's vanishing records, in a space redesigned by Maya Lin.
The story
The Museum of Chinese in America began as a rescue. In the late 1970s, as Chinatown leases ran out and Chinese laundries closed, people's belongings and papers were going out with the trash. In 1980 John Kuo Wei Tchen and Charlie Lai founded the New York Chinatown History Project to save them and the stories that went with them. It grew at 70 Mulberry Street, took its current name in 2007, and in 2009 moved here, to 215 Centre Street, into a space completely redesigned by Maya Lin. Her bronze Journey Wall in the lobby lets families record where they came from. In January 2020 a five alarm fire struck 70 Mulberry Street, where the museum still kept about 85,000 archival items; when city workers carried the boxes out, the museum's president called them very much salvageable. As you go through, keep in mind the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, which Congress did not repeal until 1943. A protest has taken place outside for several years. The museum says it reflects community concerns over a new jail, gentrification and lost institutions, that it is not responsible for those, and that it wants to listen.
