New York's first Catholic cathedral, built 1809 to 1815 in what is now Nolita, behind a brick wall once defended against a nativist mob.

Guide's tip. Visiting hours could not be confirmed; check oldcathedral.org before planning to go inside. The main entrance is on Mott Street. It is an active parish, so go in quietly, use no flash and avoid Mass times. Catacomb tours are run separately.

The story

Walk along the high brick wall on Mulberry Street first. The trustees built it in 1834, and two years later, when a nativist mob set out to attack New York's Catholic cathedral, openings were cut through it and the church was defended with muskets. The church behind it was begun in 1809 and dedicated in 1815, designed by Joseph François Mangin, who was also working on New York's City Hall. When it was finished it was the largest church in the city, and it was the seat of New York's Catholic bishops until the new St. Patrick's opened on Fifth Avenue in 1879. A fire gutted it in 1866; it was rebuilt and reopened in 1868, and its 1868 Henry Erben organ is still played on Sundays. Lorenzo Da Ponte, Mozart's librettist, had his funeral here in 1838. Beneath the church are catacombs where Bishop John Connolly and members of the Delmonico restaurant family lie, and Pierre Toussaint, now on the road to sainthood, was buried here before being moved uptown. In 2010 Pope Benedict XVI made it a minor basilica. It is an active parish, so if the doors are open, go in quietly.
