The E. V. Haughwout Building is a five-story, 79-foot-tall (24 m) commercial loft building in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, at the corner of Broome Street and Broadway. Built in 1857 to a design by John P. Gaynor, with cast-iron facades for two street-fronts provided by Daniel D. Badger's Architectural Iron Works, it originally housed Eder V. Haughwout's fashionable emporium, which sold imported cut glass and silverware as well as its own handpainted china and fine chandeliers, and which attracted many wealthy clients – including Mary Todd Lincoln, who had new official Whi
The story
On 23 March 1857 this corner opened with the world's first successful passenger elevator, built for the building by Elisha Otis. It cost $300, ran off a steam engine in the basement and climbed at about eight inches a second, so five floors took close to two minutes. Speed was never the point. The point was that the car would not fall.
Eder Haughwout sold cut glass, chandeliers and hand painted china inside. Mary Todd Lincoln had White House china painted here. The two cast iron fronts came from Daniel Badger's Architectural Iron Works, modeled on a Venetian library by Sansovino and repeated bay after identical bay, because iron is poured into a mold and the mold can be used again.
The dull beige is not grime. In 1995 the columns were repainted Turkish drab, the original color, chosen so iron would pass for stone. It became a New York City landmark in 1965, one of the first. Stand on the southwest corner of Broadway and Broome to see both fronts at once.

Eder Haughwout vendía aquí cristal tallado, lámparas y porcelana pintada a mano.
