A free self-guided walk through the famous campus: the 1916 Great Dome over Killian Court, the 825-foot Infinite Corridor, and outdoor sculpture by Calder and Picasso along the way.
The story
The Great Dome sits on top of Building 10, a hundred feet across, finished in 1916 and patterned on the Pantheon in Rome. Stand at the far end of Killian Court and look straight up the lawn. That is the photograph, and it is the view the university puts on its own diplomas.
It is also a target. MIT calls its pranks hacks, and putting something on that dome overnight is the highest form of the art. On 9 May 1994, the last day of classes, students assembled a full-size campus police cruiser up there: the metal shell of a Chevrolet Cavalier on a wooden frame, a dummy officer at the wheel, a box of donuts, and the licence plate IHTFP. A fire truck appeared in 2006. In 2009, for the fortieth anniversary of the moon landing, a half-scale Apollo lunar module. In 2019, Captain America's shield.
Nothing is announced and nothing lasts. Physical Plant takes it down within hours.
