A campus with no gates, strung nearly two miles along Commonwealth Avenue in Boston
The story
BU has no quad, and that is the whole story of it. The university spent its first sixty years scattered in rented rooms around Beacon Hill and Copley Square, and when it finally bought land in the 1920s what it could afford was a thin strip along the Charles. So the campus is a mile and a half of Commonwealth Avenue with the Green Line running down the middle of it, and students cross a working streetcar line to get to class.
One thing to look for. Marsh Chapel, the Gothic building with the tower, is where Howard Thurman preached; Martin Luther King Jr. finished his doctorate here in 1955 and Thurman was his dean.
Ride the B branch and get off at whatever you came for. Riding to the end and walking back is a mile you did not need to walk.
