The story
Fenway opened on April 20, 1912, and almost nobody noticed. The Titanic had gone down five days earlier and the sinking still held the front page of every Boston paper, so the Red Sox beating New York 7 to 6 in extra innings ran somewhere further back.
The left field wall is 37 feet 2 inches high and it stood there from the first day, but for 35 years it was covered in advertisements. The club stripped the signs off and painted the whole thing green in 1947, and only then did anyone start calling it the Green Monster. The scoreboard set into its base has been worked by hand since 1934. Two people stand inside the wall during the game and slot the numbers in.
Look for the single red seat out in the right field bleachers, section 42, row 37, seat 21. Ted Williams landed a ball there on June 9, 1946, measured at 502 feet, the longest hit in this park's history.
