The MetLife Building (also 200 Park Avenue and formerly the Pan Am Building) is a skyscraper at Park Avenue and 45th Street, north of Grand Central Terminal, in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City, New York, U.S. Designed in the International style by Richard Roth, Walter Gropius, and Pietro Belluschi and completed in 1962, the MetLife Building is 808 feet (246 m) tall with 59 stories. It was advertised as the world's largest commercial office space by square footage at its opening, with 2.4 million square feet (220,000 m2) of usable office space.
The story
It was built on air. The trains into Grand Central run below, and 200 Park Avenue went up over the railroad's air rights, opening March 7, 1963 as the Pan Am Building. Fifty nine stories, 808 feet, 2.4 million square feet, advertised at the opening as the world's largest commercial office space. Walter Gropius and Pietro Belluschi worked on it with Richard Roth, and the critics never forgave them. Vincent Scully called it a fatal blow to Park Avenue in 1961, before it opened, because it seals off the view up the avenue.
Helicopters landed on the roof from December 1965. Service stopped, then returned in February 1977. On May 16 that year a landing gear collapsed while passengers boarded, a rotor blade tore loose and killed four men on the roof and one on the street below. Flights ended that day and never resumed.
Walk south on Park Avenue from 47th Street: the 1929 Helmsley Building stands in front and the slab rises out of its back. The lobby is a public passage into Grand Central, so cut through.
