The story
The terminal opened on 2 February 1913, and it did not take long for someone to notice that the sky was wrong. The zodiac across the turquoise ceiling runs in reverse, east where west should be. The explanation offered was that the painters worked from a medieval manuscript which showed the heavens as God would see them, from outside the celestial sphere looking in.
Find the small black rectangle near Cancer, the crab. Restorers left that one patch uncleaned in 1998 so you could see what they had taken off. Testing showed the grime was mostly tar and nicotine, decades of cigarettes smoked under that ceiling.
Then walk down the ramp toward the Oyster Bar and stand facing one corner of the tiled arch, with someone at the corner diagonally opposite. Speak quietly into the tile. They will hear you clearly from the far side of the vault. Nobody built it as a trick. The Guastavino tile simply does that.

La terminal abrió el 2 de febrero de 1913 y no tardó mucho en que alguien notara que el cielo estaba al revés. El zodíaco del techo turquesa corre invertido, con el este donde debería estar el oeste.
