The Chrysler Building is a 1,046-foot-tall (319 m), Art Deco skyscraper in the East Midtown neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, United States. Located at the intersection of 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue, it is the tallest steel-framed brick building in the world.
The story
William Van Alen and H. Craig Severance had once been partners. The partnership ended badly, and by 1929 the two were putting up skyscrapers a mile apart, each watching the other's height. Severance pushed 40 Wall Street to 927 feet and thought he had won.
Van Alen had a 125-foot spire assembled in secret inside his own tower's frame. On October 23, 1929, it was raised through the crown and riveted into place in ninety minutes. The building stood at 1,046 feet, the tallest in the world. It held that for eleven months, until the Empire State Building opened in May 1931.
Walter Chrysler paid for the building out of his own income, not the car company's. Look at the 31st floor for replicas of 1929 Chrysler radiator caps, and the 61st for the steel eagles.
The lobby is free and open on weekdays. Look up at Edward Trumbull's ceiling mural, 110 feet by 67. There has been no observation deck here since 1945, so do not come expecting a view.
