The story
When Marshall Field and Company opened the Mart in 1930 as a single wholesale market, it was the largest building in the world. It stands on the air rights over the old Chicago and North Western railroad station: two city blocks long, 25 stories high, 3.7 million square feet by the Mart's own count. Alfred Shaw designed it in the Art Deco style of its day.
Joseph P. Kennedy bought it in 1945, and it had its own ZIP code until 2008. Just west is Wolf Point, where the river divides.
On Thursday to Sunday evenings from April to December, Art on theMART projects moving images across its river front. The organisers say the best view is from the Riverwalk Jetty between Wells and Franklin.
