The story
The idea of walking beside the river goes back to Daniel Burnham's 1909 Plan of Chicago, but this path was built only in recent decades, block by block, after Congress approved building out into the waterway in 2004. Each block between two bridges is a room with its own use: the Marina, the Cove, the River Theater, the Water Plaza, the Jetty and the Confluence. The last three opened in 2016.
The River Theater is the broad flight of stepped seats between Clark and LaSalle that links the water to Wacker Drive, shaded by trees. Sit, as everyone does, and watch the boats.
The river once carried the city's sewage into the lake. The Riverwalk, free and open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., is part of how Chicago turned to face it again.

La idea de pasear junto al río viene del Plan de Chicago de Daniel Burnham de 1909, pero este paseo se construyó apenas en las últimas décadas, tramo a tramo, después de que el Congreso aprobara en 2004 construir sobre el cauce. Cada tramo entre dos puentes es una sala con su propio uso: la Marina, la Cala, el River Theater, la Plaza del Agua, el Jetty y la Confluencia. Los tres últimos se abrieron en 2016.
