The story
Ballard's city hall stood on this corner. The city voted to join Seattle on November 6, 1906, by 996 to 874, pushed by a shortage of good water, and on May 29, 1907, the day the City of Ballard ceased to exist, the hall was draped in black crepe. The building was damaged in the 1965 earthquake and demolished two years later, but its 1,000 pound brass bell was saved. It was rededicated on April 11, 1976, with Mayor Wes Uhlman and King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, at the ceremony that dedicated the Ballard Avenue Landmark District.
Seattle Parks says the brick tower that holds it was dedicated in 1989, while HistoryLink says the King dedicated the little park and its bell tower in 1976; look for the compass in its floor. The garden is named for a local character, Marvin Sjoberg, and Bergen Place, across the street, was dedicated by King Olav V of Norway in 1975.
