The story
Ballard was its own city from 1890 to 1907, named for William Rankin Ballard, a steamboat captain who managed the land company. It grew on shingles: by 1895 it had the largest shingle industry in the world, and much of the material that rebuilt Seattle after the fire of 1889 came from its mills. Many of the workers came from Scandinavia, though HistoryLink notes that Scandinavians never made up more than a third of the town.
Ballard Avenue was the main street, with streetcar and interurban service. When business moved to Market Street, the avenue was left behind, and its buildings of the 1890s to the 1940s survived. The City Council made it a landmark district in 1976. Look for granite curbs with rings for tying up horses, the 1893 Cors and Wegener Building at 20th Avenue NW, and two facing banks at NW Vernon Place.

Ballard fue una ciudad independiente de 1890 a 1907 y tomó el nombre de William Rankin Ballard, un capitán de barco de vapor que administraba la compañía de tierras.
