The story
Historic Fire Station No. 6 was built in 1894 on the corner of Boulevard and Auburn Avenue and served the Sweet Auburn neighborhood as a working fire station until 1991. When Martin Luther King Jr. was a boy on this street, the station was segregated: white firemen served a mostly African American community. In the 1960s it became one of the first fire stations in Atlanta to integrate its crews, and that story is told inside, beside a restored 1927 American LaFrance fire engine. Turned into museum space between 1994 and 1996, it now serves as the national park's temporary visitor center while the main building is renovated. Come here first to sign up for the birth home tour.

La histórica Estación de Bomberos n.º 6 se construyó en 1894 en la esquina de Boulevard y Auburn Avenue y sirvió al barrio de Sweet Auburn como cuartel de bomberos hasta 1991. Cuando Martin Luther King Jr. era niño en esta calle, la estación estaba segregada: bomberos blancos atendían a una comunidad mayoritariamente afroamericana.
