The story

Look up at the clock tower. This corner has had a tower since about 1833, when a wooden fire lookout rose over the Jefferson Market, named for the late president. The building you see was finished in 1877 as the Third Judicial District Courthouse, designed by Frederick Clarke Withers in the High Victorian Gothic style: red brick, dark and pale stone, steep roofs, and over one doorway a scene from The Merchant of Venice where a church would put a saint. In a poll of architects in the 1880s it was voted one of the most beautiful buildings in America. The country's first night court sat here, and in 1927 Mae West was tried here over her Broadway play Sex, then served ten days on Welfare Island. When the courts left in 1945, the building faced demolition. Neighbors led by Margot Gayle and Ruth Wittenberg, whose committee began by demanding that someone get the clock going again, won it a new life as a public library, opened on November 27, 1967. Go inside: the children's room was the police court, and the brick vaulted basement where prisoners once waited is now the reference room.
