Contemporary art in a glass box cantilevered over the harbor on the Seaport walk, with a free summer satellite, the Watershed, across the water by ferry in East Boston.
The story
The ICA moved thirteen times in seventy years. It opened in 1936 as the Boston Museum of Modern Art and spent decades in borrowed rooms on Newbury Street, Beacon Street, Boylston Street, wherever would have it. In that first year it put on the first American survey of Paul Gauguin. It did not own a building until 2006.
Diller Scofidio + Renfro gave it one that pushes out rather than back. The gallery floor is cantilevered about eighty feet over the HarborWalk and ends in mid air, without taking a foot of public ground from anyone.
Most people walk straight past the best room in it. The Mediatheque sits underneath that cantilever, angled steeply down toward the harbor, and the angle cuts the skyline and the horizon out of the glass. You sit down and see nothing but moving water.
Before you go in, sit on the wooden grandstand steps facing the water. They are outside the ticket line.

El ICA se mudó trece veces en setenta años. Abrió en 1936 como Boston Museum of Modern Art y pasó décadas en salas prestadas de Newbury Street, Beacon Street, Boylston Street, donde lo aceptaran. En ese primer año montó la primera retrospectiva de Paul Gauguin en Estados Unidos. No tuvo edificio propio hasta 2006.
Diller Scofidio + Renfro le dieron uno que sale hacia fuera en lugar de replegarse. La planta de galerías vuela unos veinticuatro metros sobre el paseo del puerto y termina en el aire, sin quitarle a nadie un palmo de suelo público.
