The story
The Washington Park Arboretum covers 230 acres. The city owns the land and the university the plants, under an agreement signed on December 6, 1934, and the gardens like to say that a leaf belongs to the university until it falls, when it becomes the city's. The Arboretum was built as a Works Progress Administration project from 1935, employing 800 workers, to a plan by the Olmsted Brothers drawn by James Frederick Dawson. The Graham Visitors Center opened in 1985, paid for by the Arboretum Foundation for its 50th anniversary, and is named for Donald G. Graham.
The shore to the north was Duwamish land. The Duwamish Tribe records a village it calls Big House just east of the mouth of Arboretum Creek, and a burial ground on what is now Foster Island.
