A level three quarter mile walk of grass through the Arboretum, once a logging skid road and a horse speedway, planted with thousands of azaleas in 1939.
The story
In the late 1890s this was a skid road used to drag logs out of the forest. By 1906 it was being built into a three quarter mile speedway for horse racing, paid for by the horse owners, and riders used the park's trails until the Arboretum was established in 1934. Fred Leissler, who ran the early work, wrote of 10,000 hours and more of hand labour with wheelbarrows and 500 railroad cars of cow manure and leaf mould. Azalea Way was a key feature of the Olmsted Brothers' plan, and the Seattle Garden Club paid for its design and the first planting of thousands of azaleas in 1939. Of that plan, only the ponds and lagoons, Arboretum Drive and Azalea Way remain. The Centennial Garden near the south end marks the club's 100th anniversary in 2017.

A finales de la década de 1890 esto era un camino de arrastre para sacar troncos del bosque. En 1906 se estaba convirtiendo en una pista de carreras de caballos de tres cuartos de milla, pagada por los dueños de los caballos, y los jinetes usaron los senderos del parque hasta que se creó el Arboreto en 1934.
