The story
This small pier at the foot of Old Fulton Street marks the first ferry service between Brooklyn and Manhattan, a rowboat ferry running by 1642. On 10 May 1814 Robert Fulton's steam ferry Nassau started crossing from here, cutting the trip to a few minutes and helping turn Brooklyn into one of the world's first commuter suburbs. The bridge beside you ended that era, and the Fulton Ferry made its last run in 1924.
The refurbished pier reopened in 1997. Its railings weave in lines from Walt Whitman's poem Crossing Brooklyn Ferry, which begins, "Flood-tide below me! I see you face to face!" Bronze reliefs of local historic scenes are set into the deck. According to the DUMBO Improvement District, George Washington's army retreated across the river from this shore in August 1776.
