Bargemusic, formally known as Bargemusic, Ltd. is a classical music venue in Brooklyn, New York. Founded in 1977, until 2025 it was housed in a converted coffee barge moored at Fulton Ferry Landing on the East River near the Brooklyn Bridge. Since April 5, 2025, Bargemusic has been hosting its concerts at the Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse.
The story
A violinist named Olga Bloom bought an 1899 coffee barge in 1977 and turned it into a concert hall. It was her third barge. She rejected the first two because the acoustics were wrong. The hull ran 102 feet, the room held about 130 people, and for decades it carried more than 200 concerts a year, tied up at Fulton Ferry Landing directly under the Brooklyn Bridge. A string quartet came with the East River moving under the chairs and a passing wake sometimes shifting the floor mid phrase.
The boat did not survive. Its hull failed, and in early 2025 it was towed to Staten Island and taken apart. Bargemusic continues on land, in the Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse at Pier 5, with floor to ceiling glass facing the river and lower Manhattan. Admission is now free, and on weekends there are usually at least two performances a day. The people who run it say the search for another boat has already begun.
