The story
In 1989 the Fremont Arts Council set out to do something better with the dark ground under the north end of the Aurora Bridge than let it become, as The Seattle Times put it, an urban grotto and tire dump. The neighbourhood voted on five models, and the one by a team led by Steve Badanes, with Will Martin, Donna Walter and Ross Whitehead, won easily. They built it in 1990, in about seven weeks, from steel reinforcing bar, wire and two tons of ferroconcrete: an 18 foot, one-eyed troll crushing a Volkswagen Beetle in one hand.
In 2005 the City Council renamed the street he sits on Troll Avenue. Above him runs the Aurora Bridge, dedicated on February 22, 1932, George Washington's 200th birthday. Its main piers stand on Douglas fir log piles, because there is no bedrock under Lake Union.
