The story
Before the Ship Canal, Lake Union drained west to Salmon Bay through a small creek known as Ross Creek, Shilshole Creek or the Outlet. In 1888 Fremont's developers hired Chinese labourers to widen it. The cut you see was dug for the Army Corps of Engineers by the Stillwell Brothers Construction Company between June 1912 and late 1913: 2,200 feet long, 100 feet wide at the bottom and 36 feet deep.
Fremont Canal Park runs along its north bank beside the Burke-Gilman Trail, the path laid on a railway line of 1888 and opened as a trail in 1978. Its shelter at 2nd Avenue NW looks straight down the channel toward the Fremont and Aurora bridges, and every June the park fills for the Fremont Fair.
