A rusted 1900s gasification plant turned lakefront park, industrial ruins, kite hill, and seaplanes landing on Lake Union in front of the skyline.
The story
The 1903 Olmsted plan put a park on this point. What got built instead, in 1906, was a coal and oil gasification plant that made Seattle's gas until 1956. When the city hired landscape architect Richard Haag in 1970, every other proposal was to demolish the towers. He kept them, and the park that opened in 1975 was one of the first anywhere to treat industrial wreckage as the thing worth looking at.
Not everyone agreed. It was to be named for Myrtle Edwards, the councilwoman who pushed the city to buy the land and died in a 1969 car crash. In 1972 her family asked for her name back, because the plant was staying.
The hill you picnic on is rubble from the demolished buildings, laid under topsoil, sludge and sawdust to let microbes clean the ground. The sundial at the top has no pointer. Stand on today's date and your own shadow gives the time.
Come at dusk. The skyline sits due south across the water, and the seaplanes land low.

El plan Olmsted de 1903 preveía un parque en esta punta. Lo que se construyó, en 1906, fue una planta de gasificación de carbón y petróleo que dio gas a Seattle hasta 1956.
