The story
Forsyth Park began as a 10 acre plot in the 1840s and now covers 30 acres. It is named for Governor John Forsyth.
The fountain at its north end was ordered from the Janes, Beebe and Co. catalogue as Model No. 5, after a design by a foundry near Paris; installation began in July 1858 and it was first turned on in August. In June 2025 it was lifted from its basin for its first full restoration since 1988. Robinson Iron Works in Alabama restored the iron, reinstallation began in September, and the city celebrated its return on December 19, 2025.
Every St. Patrick's Day the water is dyed green. The Garden of Fragrance, made for blind visitors, opens on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is the end of the walk: find a bench under the live oaks.
