The story

First African Baptist Church calls itself the oldest continuous Black church in North America, constituted in December 1777. Other congregations dispute who was first, so hear it as the church's own claim.

Its history begins in 1773 with George Liele, a formerly enslaved man who was the first African American licensed by the Baptists to preach in Georgia. The brick sanctuary on Franklin Square was finished in 1859 under its fourth pastor, William J. Campbell, built by free and enslaved members.

Climb to the balcony. The pews there are original, and the church says enslaved Africans made them and nailed them into the floor. Holes in the floor are said to have been air holes for people escaping slavery, laid out in a pattern read as a Kongo cosmogram; that is tradition and interpretation, and a good guide tells it so. Early civil rights meetings in Savannah were held here.

It is a National Historic Landmark and a living church. Tours run Monday to Saturday at 1 p.m. only.
