The story
The Filbert Steps drop down the east cliff of Telegraph Hill toward Sansome Street, past gardens, cottages and the wooden boardwalk of Napier Lane. The hill's wild parrots make this slope their home.
The garden around the steps is the work of one resident, Grace Marchant. As the neighborhood tells it, she came in the middle of the last century, when the steps ran through a dump, cleared the trash herself and won permission to burn it; it is said the fire burned for three days. She gardened here for decades and died in 1982, aged 96.
In 1989 a building permit threatened part of the garden. Neighbors formed Friends of the Garden, and the Trust for Public Land bought the lot and resold it with deed restrictions that protect the garden, while donations from garden lovers made up the difference in price.

Las escaleras de Filbert bajan por el acantilado este de Telegraph Hill hacia Sansome Street, entre jardines, casitas y el paseo de tablones de Napier Lane. Los loros salvajes de la colina tienen su hogar en esta ladera.
