The story
City Lights opened in June 1953 in one small room on Columbus Avenue, the first all-paperback bookstore in the country, founded by the poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Peter D. Martin. In 1955 Ferlinghetti began publishing, with the Pocket Poets Series.
In November 1956 City Lights published Allen Ginsberg's Howl and Other Poems. On June 1, 1957 police arrested the store's manager, Shigeyoshi Murao, and later Ferlinghetti, for selling it. The charges against Murao were dropped; at Ferlinghetti's trial Judge Clayton Horn ruled that a work with redeeming social significance could not be obscene.
The triangular building dates from 1907. The poetry room is upstairs, where the founder of Vesuvio next door once lived, and in 2001 the Board of Supervisors made the store San Francisco Landmark No. 228. Jack Kerouac Alley runs beside it.

City Lights abrió en junio de 1953 en un cuarto pequeño de Columbus Avenue, la primera librería del país dedicada solo a libros de bolsillo, fundada por el poeta Lawrence Ferlinghetti y Peter D. Martin. En 1955 Ferlinghetti empezó a editar con la colección Pocket Poets.
