Lillie Hitchcock Coit's 1933 tower on Telegraph Hill, its base lined with 1934 New Deal frescoes of California life that were once locked away.
The story
Coit Tower was finished in 1933 on top of Telegraph Hill and named for Lillie Hitchcock Coit, who died in 1929 leaving money for adding to the beauty of the city she loved. It was designed by the firm of Arthur Brown Jr., architect of City Hall, and, the city says, not to look like a fire hose nozzle.
The murals in its base were painted in 1934 by artists of the Public Works of Art Project and show life in California during the Depression. During the waterfront strike that began on May 9, 1934, a hammer and sickle and the banner of a Communist newspaper in two panels caused an uproar. The tower was padlocked, those two details were painted over, and it opened on October 12, 1934.
The hill is named for a semaphore telegraph put up in 1850 to announce arriving ships.
