A performing arts college in Boston's Theater District that restored three historic theatres and runs them
The story
Charles Wesley Emerson founded this school in 1880 as the Boston Conservatory of Elocution, Oratory, and Dramatic Art. It spent most of a century in Back Bay. Then in the 1990s, under president John Zacharis, it began buying into the Theater District, starting with 180 Tremont Street.
What it did next is why the block still has its theatres. The Cutler Majestic, opened in 1903, reopened in 2003 after Emerson restored it. The Paramount, a 1932 movie house, was bought in 2005 and reopened in 2010 as the Paramount Center. The college took its option on the Colonial in 2006, putting a dormitory in the upper floors of the building while the theatre stayed a theatre.
