The Back Bay's great square between Trinity Church and the Boston Public Library, rebuilt by the City and fully reopened in 2026, beside the Marathon's finish on Boylston Street.
The story
Copley Square is named for the painter John Singleton Copley, who once owned the Beacon Hill pasture where Louisburg Square was built. Trinity Church closes its east end, the Boston Public Library stands across Dartmouth Street to the west, and the City rebuilt the square between 2023 and 2026, adding forty six trees and restoring the fountain.
Boylston Street, on the north side, is the final stretch of the Boston Marathon, which the Boston Athletic Association calls the oldest annual marathon in the world. The first, in 1897, finished near here. Bobbi Gibb ran it in 1966 without a number, Kathrine Switzer was given one in 1967, and the women's division became official in 1972.
On April 15, 2013, two bombs exploded near the finish. Krystle Campbell, Lingzi Lu and Martin Richard were killed, and Officer Sean Collier three days later. Boston Police Sergeant Dennis Simmonds, hurt by one of the bombers' explosives in Watertown that week, died of his injuries in 2014. Memorials stand on Boylston Street where it happened.
