Cable Car Museum

The story

San Francisco's cable cars move because a continuously running cable travels beneath the street. The operator uses a grip to hold or release that cable, borrowing its motion to pull the car uphill and controlling the descent with brakes.

The museum occupies the Washington-Mason powerhouse, so its largest exhibit is working infrastructure. From the gallery, visitors can watch the winding wheels and sheaves that keep the lines moving. Historic cars, grips and photographs explain the system, but the live machinery gives the building its force.

Follow one moving cable until it disappears through the floor and out under the city. The clang outside now connects to this room. Leave toward the Dragon Gate, where another San Francisco system begins: a neighborhood shaped by migration, business and community life.
