The 1807 meeting house on Beacon Hill's flat main street, bought by the First African Methodist Episcopal congregation in 1876.
The story
Built in 1807 for the Third Baptist Church, this meeting house kept its seating segregated, with Black worshippers sent to the gallery. In 1836 a member, Timothy Gilbert, invited African Americans into his pew and was expelled; the church he then helped found became Tremont Temple.
In 1876 the First African Methodist Episcopal congregation bought the building for $40,000. In 1895 a special session here formed the National Federation of Afro-American Women, and when the congregation left in 1939 it was the last Black institution to leave Beacon Hill. Later, as a Unitarian Universalist church, it held Boston's first gay dance in 1970.
You may read that Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth spoke here. The National Park Service says that story, from a 1937 newspaper article, is still unconfirmed.
